The Dragon Boat Festival falls on the 5th day of the fifth lunar month, a traditional festival with a history of thousands of years, mainly to commemorate Qu Yuan, a great patriotic poet in ancient China. It carries the cultural spirit of patriotism, integrity and the pursuit of a healthy life. The most iconic customs are dragon boat races, which are lively collective activities symbolizing unity and cooperation, and eating zongzi—sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves with various fillings. In addition, people also hang mugwort and calamus, wear sachets, and drink realgar wine, all of which are meant to ward off diseases, avoid evil spirits and pray for health and safety.
